Today’s wisdom is from The Procrastination Equation by Piers Steel. (Really powerful book--check out the Notes and check out Conquering Procrastination 101 as well.)
Professor Steel reminds us: “Procrastination isn’t about laziness—it’s about mismanaged motivation.”
In The Procrastination Equation, He gives us a formula for overcoming procrastination:
It goes like this.
Motivation = (Expectancy × Value) ÷ (Impulsiveness × Delay)
It’s a little weird on first glance, but check out the notes for more.
Here’s how to apply it today (more wisdom in less time style):
1. Increase Expectancy. Piers tells us: “Believe in your ability to succeed.” You’ve got to Expect that you can achieve the thing you want to achieve. If you don’t, you gonna procrastinate. Break big tasks into smaller, manageable steps to build confidence.
2. Enhance Value. “Focus on why the task matters to you.” Connect your work to a larger goal or purpose.
3. Reduce Delay and Impulsiveness. He tells us, “Shorten the time between intention and action.” Speed is a force. Use techniques like setting a timer or the 5-Second Rule to get started immediately.
So with that in mind...
What’s one task you can take action on today using that formula? Get on that.
