Today’s wisdom is from The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown. (I love Patrick and his wisdom--check out the Notes and Breathing 101 for more.)
Patrick teaches us: “The way you breathe impacts every system in your body.”
Optimal breathing can improve your health, performance, and focus.
Here’s a quick look on how to apply the Oxygen Advantage today:
1. Breathe Through Your Nose. Patrick tells us, “Nasal breathing is more efficient and beneficial.” So commit to breathing through your nose today, even during exercise--check out the notes for why.
2. Practice Breath Control. “Slow, controlled breathing calms the nervous system.” It’s the fastest way to flip the switch on your parasympathetic nervous system. Take 5 minutes to slow your breath to a steady rhythm even 5 seconds can flip that switch.
3. Improve your Sleep with Better Breathing. “Poor breathing habits affect your sleep quality,” Patrick tells us. So focus on nasal breathing before bed tonight. If you feel so bold wear sleep tape. We talked about that in the note—there are reasons not to—but it’s also a powerful practice if it’s right for you.
For now.
