Not too long ago we chatted about how I get a little annoyed when I hear that people don’t see themselves in the elite performers I often use as exemplars for what we’re all capable of. 🤓
As you may recall, I said that, for me, it’s not negotiable.
YOU ARE ELITE.
Now…
I actually had a chat with Michael about those +1s. I checked in to see if he thought I was being a little aggressive. 🤓
He told me that he loved them and we recommitted to focusing on emphasizing the fact that YOU (yes, YOU!!!) are the Hero we’ve been waiting for.
And…
He offered some potential edits to the copy.
One of them was to change “YOU ARE ELITE!” to “YOU CAN BE ELITE!”
I initially approved the edits.
Then…
I lost some sleep over them.
😆
True story.
I found myself up in the middle of the night getting a Deep Work Target swipe 🎯 in as I reflected on those simple words.
Of course, technically, I suppose it’s more accurate to say that, if you aren’t currently performing at what someone may consider an “elite” level, switching out “you ARE elite” for “you CAN BE elite” would be appropriate.
But…
And this is a BIG BUT!!
Making that shift (however subtle and however “technically accurate” it may be), violates the spirit of my conviction.
As I was reflecting on this in the middle of the night (yes, this is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night!), I thought of Eric Butterworth and Superman and the Golden Buddha.
First, Butterworth.
He’s one of my all-time favorite spiritual teachers. He was Maya Angelou’s spiritual mentor while they were both alive and Oprah considers one of his books among her favorites.
In that book that Oprah loves so much (called Discover the Power Within You), he tells us:
“The more we understand the concepts of Jesus, the more we realize that the only time we can truthfully say, ‘That’s just the way I am,’ is when we are referring to the divinity within us. You have a great potentiality, a divine self within you that needs to be released. This is what Jesus really taught.”
THAT’s what I’m talking about when I say that YOU ARE ELITE.
When I say that, I’m not thinking about what you think about yourself and/or whether or not you’ve REALIZED the fact that you are more than you may think you are (yet!) and whether or not you’ve actualized your divinely Heroic potential (yet!).
I’m thinking about the fact that, from my perspective you are absolutely, unequivocally, Heroic.
We just need to fully wake you up to that fact and help you chip away at what’s in the way, as you step up and give us all you’ve got.
All day.
Every day.
Especially…
TODAY.
