#1948 The Blind Man Walking

With the Support of Others

I’m typing this on Flight #1059 from San Diego to Austin.

The flight was delayed by half an hour or so then we sat on the runway for an extra 15 minutes or so.

Which was AWESOME.

Why?

Because…

It gave me an opportunity to share the whole “You know how long this trip would have taken 100 years ago?!” wisdom with Eleanor when she asked (for the 10th time!) “How much longer till we take off?”

😆 🤓

Now…

Other than a one-night trip to the hotel to give Mommy a little time by herself, this is the first big trip the three of us have taken by ourselves.

Emerson and I have had a BUNCH of boys-only adventures and it was great to travel with the big girl as well.

She’s awesome.

So…

In our last +1, we talked about our micro moments of awesome with Dante.

As you may recall, after celebrating his 1-on-1 basketball skills, I made fun of myself and how small I am compared to Arturas Karnišovas who runs the Bulls. I literally look like a little Lego mini-figure standing next to him.

No joke.

Laugh with and at me here.

😂

Note: Lego mini-figures are in my mind because Emerson traveled with a Ninjago guy in his pocket. (Eleanor's book bag was stuffed with her stuffies. Hah.)

Today I want to chat about what the kids and I saw after we checked in (and created another micro-moment of awesome with the lady who helped us do that!).

As I sipped my coffee (I’m not dumping that out before we go through TSA, folks! 🫡 ☕️), we saw a blind man walking by himself.

He had his cane, as you’d expect.

And…

(Yes, I’m getting goosebumps and tears in my eyes as I type this…)

As he navigated with his cane, he was also holding his smartphone up in front of him—with the camera pointed in the direction he was headed.

He had headphones on and it was (goosebumps) clear that he was using an APP to navigate his way through the busy airport to find his way to the TSA line.

It was humbling and inspiring to watch him.

I told the kids to check him out.

I explained what he was doing it and how he was doing it—celebrating him and his ability to navigate the airport on his own.

Then I told them about the app and to imagine all the anonymous heroes who created the app he was using to navigate his way around the airport and how hard they must have worked to create something so extraordinary.

Then…

The most amazing thing happened.

Right as he was navigating his way to the back of the TSA line, a man put his hand on the blind man’s back and led him through the most efficient pathway through the line while all the other people in line helped him get by.

I got tears in my eyes typing that.

It was such a simple but such a powerful reminder of the goodness of human beings.

In a world in which so much anger and polarization can permeate our society, we MUST remember our essential goodness.

We must, as Mister Rogers’ mom told him when he was a little boy… “See the helpers!”

And…

We must not only SEE the kind human beings helping others, we must point those people out to our kids.

And…

Of course, we must BE those humbly Heroic helpers.

That’s Today’s +1.

As I told my beautiful kids…

“I want to make sure YOU are the ones helping people whenever you see someone in need.”

When?

As always..

All day.

Every day.

Especially…

TODAY.
