Be Nice to Your Energy Engines

In our last +1, we took a quick look at some wisdom from Robert Lustig’s book Metabolical.

As you may recall, we talked about the little Energy engines inside nearly every one of the (non-red-blood!) cells inside our bodies. Add them all up and you get QUADRILLIONS of them.

Lustig tells us that it’s the health of THOSE little guys that dictate how great you feel TODAY and how likely you are to get a chronic disease tomorrow.

I repeat…

“Chronic disease is mitochondrial dysfunction, and mitochondrial dysfunction is chronic disease. They are one and the same.”

In our last +1, I followed that wisdom up by reminding you that the best way to take care of the QUADRILLIONS of little Energy engines is to DOMINATE YOUR FUNDAMENTALS.

Aka…

Optimize your eating, moving, sleeping, breathing, and focusing.

Then I dropped my go-to anchor line as I encouraged you to dominate those fundies “All day. Every day. Especially… TODAY!!”

Now…

I happened to have a tab open on my Mac with the skeleton for another +1 I was working on and I figured NOW would be a good time to polish it up and share it so…

Let’s do that.

Quick context…

In addition to Metabolical (and Outlive and Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind, and Forever Strong!), one of the other books I read on my Energy/Nutrition/Longevity binge was a book called Good Energy by Casey Means, MD.

In that book, she basically echoes Lustig’s wisdom and tells us to optimize our mitochondrial functioning.

She offers a ton of tips on how to go about doing that but boils it down to doing THREE things nutrition-wise:

  1. Quit eating refined added sugar.
  2. Quit eating refined industrial vegetable and seed oils.
  3. Quit eating refined grains.

Boom.

Mitochondria optimized!

Seriously…

If you actually did that, you’d eliminate ALL ultra-processed foods and, I can assure you, you’d feel considerably more HEROICALLY ENERGIZED.

That’s not quite what I wanted to share.

This is…

Dr. Means also tells us: “Consider this: when a kid drinks one bottle of Coke, they ingest as much added sugar as they might have had in an entire year if they were living 150 years ago.”

And…

THAT’s Today’s +1.

Think about that for a moment.

ONE BOTTLE OF COKE = AN ENTIRE YEAR OF SUGAR 150 YEARS AGO.

Do you think that’s a wise idea?
