I’m typing this from a beach outside of Athens.
I’m about 15 feet from the water of the Aegean Sea. It’s early in the morning. High tide.
I just finished my workout. I don’t know if there are any better places in the world to do 101 burpees but this is at least tied for first.
Now…
I hammered out my burpees 11 at a time. 8 sets of 11. Then a final lucky set of 13.
In between each set, I walked in the sand right at the edge of where the water was reaching the shore. I’d walk for a bit then walk back to the spot where I was doing my burpees—waiting until I was back in Zone 2 before hammering the next set.
After doing that a few times, I noticed something interesting.
My footprints vanished almost immediately.
It’s hard to be in Athens, immersed in the wisdom of Socrates and Plato and Aristotle (while reflecting on the fact that Marcus Aurelius once visited the acropolis as well!) without thinking about how perfectly those vanishing footprints capture the reality of our astonishingly brief stay on this beautiful planet.
And…
