#1401 This (!) Is the Day

In our last +1, we spent some time with Steven Pressfield and his thoughts on the Resistance (with a CAPITAL R!) that exists within each of us.

Call it whatever you want (Part X, the “Demon”) but it’s no joke.

As Pressfield tells us: “What is Resistance? It’s our own tendency—yours and mine and everyone’s—to yield to procrastination, self-doubt, fear, impatience, self-inflation, self-denigration, distraction, laziness, arrogance, complacency, and perfectionism. It’s our inability to focus, our incapacity to press on through adversity. It’s our terror of finishing and exposing our work to the judgment of the marketplace. It’s fear of failure. It’s fear of success. Fear of humiliation. Fear of destitution. It’s our inability to defer gratification, to acquire and act with self-discipline, self-validation, and self-reinforcement.”

We ALL (emphasis on ALL!) have that little whiney voice within our heads that, when we allow it to dominate our thoughts (important distinction on WHEN we allow it to!), will try to convince us that what we’re here to do is impossible.

Here’s the question for Today.

How do we deal with Resistance?

Well…

Here’s one powerful way Pressfield deals with it.

He tells us: “Here’s my frame of mind as I sit down to work: This is the day. There is no other day. This is the day. In other words, I release every thought that smacks of, ‘Maybe we can do this some other time.’ There is no other time. Today is the Super Bowl. Today is the day I give birth. Today is the day I die.”

Yep.

TODAY’S THE DAY, Hero.

Remember that even Mister Rogers (!!!) experienced “the tortures of the damned” (aka Resistance/Part X!) when he created scripts for his show—DECADES into his work.

Then…

Take a deep breath. Flip the switch.

And…

Get to work.

Today’s our Super Bowl. Today’s the day we give birth. Today’s the day we die.

Make Today a Masterpiece.

Give us all you’ve got.
