#1078 Success Doesn’t Matter in This World

Commitment Does

This morning I started my Deep Work by reviewing my notes from my recent Coaching call with my Yoda. Among other things, we were talking about life and death.

I was scanning the first of my four pages of notes when a line at the bottom right of the first page jumped out at me:

SUCCESS DOESN’T MATTER IN THIS WORLD —> COMMITMENT DOES.

I don’t even remember Phil saying that in our call. To unpack the context and nuance of what he meant would take awhile, but when I read that, it just LANDED.

Especially because I’ve been deeply immersed in David Brooks’ new book The Second Mountain, which, as we’ve discussed is all about “The Quest for a Moral Life.”

You know what David says is THE #1 thing we need to do to move from the first mountain featuring “hyper-individualistic” pursuits to a more “relational” second-mountain life of deep moral joy?

He says we need to MAKE COMMITMENTS.

Four of them.

We need to commit to our marriages, to our vocations, to our faith/philosophy of life and to our communities.

I imagine we’ll talk about those in more depth soon.

For Today’s +1, we’ll keep it simple.

To whom and to what are YOU committed?

Let’s remember: Ultimately….

SUCCESS DOESN’T MATTER IN THIS WORLD —> COMMITMENT DOES.

Let’s commit to a life of deep meaning and purpose and service.

Let’s go ALL IN.

TODAY.
