#381 Seneca: The Worse a Person Is the Less He Feels It

Aurelius: Don’t Like Yourself? Why Would I Care Whether or Not You Like Me?

Continuing our good times with our Stoic friends, how about couple more gems from Seneca and Aurelius?

Seneca once said, “The worse a person is the less he feels it.”

Think about that for a moment.

“The worse a person is the less he feels it.”

And, guess what? This corollary follows that truth: The worse a person is the less he (or she) feels it. And… The less he wants to hear about it from YOU! (Hah.)

That’s Part I of this +1.

Here’s Part II: The worse a person is, the more he’s going to see the worst in YOU.

Which leads us to one of my favorite gems from Marcus Aurelius. In Meditations, he tells us: “The approval of such men, who do not even stand well in their own eyes, has no value for him.”

Translation: If someone doesn’t even like THEMSELVES, why would I care whether or not they like ME?

Say it with me now: The worse a person is, the less he feels it. And, the worse the person is, the less he’s going to like himself (whether he’s aware of it or not). And… The less he likes himself, the less he’s going to like anyone else.

THEREFORE…

“The approval of such men, who do not even stand well in their own eyes, has no value for him.”

Amen.

Today’s +1. Two parts.

1. Keep that wisdom in mind today.

2. Flip it around and know this: The worse YOU feel, the more you’re going to see the WORST in others. So, if you’re getting all snippity-snappity with people around you, you might want to check in and see how you’re feeling about YOURSELF and quit projecting all that dislike onto everyone else. (Just sayin’.)

That is all.

Make today awesome! 😜
