In our last +1, we had fun taking the first step in building our Agency.
Pop quiz: Do you recall what that step was?
(And, MUCH more importantly: Did you take a little action to Optimize?)
Recap: According to Paul Napper and Anthony Rao, the first thing we need to do if we want to cultivate our ability to take effective action on behalf of our highest selves is to “Control Stimuli.”
How could something THAT simple/boring be that important? (Hah.)
Because, and I’m tempted to shout right now, OUR ABILITY TO FOCUS OUR ATTENTION IS OUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET. And, as it turns out, if we allow the “tsunami of inputs” to flood our consciousness from the moment we open our eyes to the moment we close our eyes, there’s simply NO WAY we will live at our fullest potential. Period.
So, that’s Step 1.
Here’s Step 2.
Paul and Anthony tell us we need to: “Associate Selectively. Surrounding yourself with healthy, empathetic, open-minded, candid, and supportive people will boost your mood, elevate your motivation, and improve your overall health and well-being.”
In their great book, they walk through the astonishing power of mirror neurons and basically scientifically validate the old quip that you are the average of the five people with whom you spend the most time.
Fact is: If you’re spending most of your time hanging out with low-agency people, your agency will take a hit.
So…
Today’s +1.
