#1021 Brain Wash

Time to Give Yourself One?

David Perlmutter is one of my favorite nutrition-physicians. We have Notes on a bunch of his books including Grain Brain, Brain Maker, and Power Up Your Brain.

So, when I heard about the new book that he wrote with his son Austin (who is also an MD), I was excited to read it.

It’s called Brain Wash.

(It’s kinda like Digital Minimalism written by nutrition-neurologist-physicians. 🤓)

As David and Austin say, the book builds on a simple premise: “Our brain’s performance is being gravely manipulated, resulting in behaviors that leave us more lonely, anxious, depressed, distrustful, illness-prone, and overweight than ever before. At the same time, we feel disconnected from ourselves, from others and from the world at large.

Their solution? We need to overhaul our mind’s operating system.

How? Via a “brain wash.”

They walk us through the factors that lead to what they call “disconnection syndrome” and, of course, how to deal with it. Check out the Notes and the book for more.

Today I want to chat about some crazy stats and tomorrow we’ll chat about a simple, yet powerful tool.

First, the crazy stats.

Did you know that “79 percent of adults reach for their smartphones in the first fifteen minutes after waking up”?

And… “That number climbs to 89 percent among people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four. Right away, we satisfy the craving to check our phones—a result of the dopamine surge.

Yikes.

Personal question time.

Ahem…

Where do YOU fall in those statistics?

If you’re currently reaching for your phone first thing when you wake up (and last thing before going to sleep), I think you already know that’s not ideal.

Today’s +1.

Is Tonight/Tomorrow morning a good time to start a new routine?

What’s ONE little thing you can do to Optimize Today?

Here’s to moving from theory to practice and giving our brains a nice little tech wash.

P.S. I thought this quote they shared by Matt Cutts (software engineer and former head of Google’s Web spam team) was pretty funny: “When you’ve got five minutes to fill, Twitter is a great way to fill thirty-five minutes.

P.P.S. At the risk of over-promoting our 2020 Mastery Series and Heroic Coach programs, helping you conquer any digital addictions you may have is one of the central themes of our work together. We need to get rid of what we call “enervated anxiety” to create more of what we call “energized tranquility.”

Here’s how one of our Heroic Coaches (Lori Lang) described our program and its benefits tech and otherwise!

In short, the Heroic Coach program is life-changing!

For me, the lessons I learned in the Heroic program have provided the wisdom and processes for me to radically shift the productivity, happiness, and fulfillment of my days.

No exaggeration. The course was THAT good!

An example is my morning and evening bookend (routine). I used to get up and go straight to work without giving much thought to my habits. By mid-morning, I was strung out, irritable, and tired.

In the evening, I would watch television, read, or check social media on my phone right up until I closed my eyes. I was having trouble sleeping, waking up around 3:00 am, and having a hard time with sleep in general.

All that has changed.

Now I have a dedicated morning routine that doesn’t include work or my phone for a full hour after I’m out of bed. And I avoid all screens (television and cell phone) and blue light an hour before going to bed.

I sleep better, I feel better, and I perform better in all areas of my life. And I’m a much more attentive mom, wife, daughter, and friend.

Heroic Coach has changed my life in so many ways. Brian Johnson and Team are the real deal. I would recommend this program to anyone… ANYONE.
