In our last +1, we talked about Mister Rogers’s wisdom on the symphony of life and the wonderful joy of harmonizing our uniqueness with the uniqueness of others.
That wisdom makes me think of Marcus Aurelius for a few reasons.
First, he tells us: “Everything – a horse, a vine – is created for some duty… For what task, then, were you yourself created? A man’s true delight is to do the things he was made for.”
In other words, what role are you here to play? What song are you here to sing?
He also tells us: “Let your one delight and refreshment be to pass from one service to the community to another, with God ever in mind.”
Mr. Rogers would, no doubt, approve of Mr. Aurelius’s admonition to, basically, be a good neighbor.
Finally, as I was scrolling through our PhilosophersNotes PDF on Meditations to copy/paste the quote above, I read this wisdom gem: “O world, I am in tune with every note of thy great harmony. For me nothing is early, nothing late, if it be timely for thee. O Nature, all that thy seasons yield is fruit for me.”
